Am I Sick Enough to Take a Sick Day?

There are times that your body just cannot keep up. You have been working hard. You have been running the kids from school to after-school activities. Then, all of a sudden, sickness strikes. But are you sick enough to take a “sick day” at work?

It can be difficult to make yourself take time off, but there are times when it’s important for your health and the health of others. Our team at AFC Urgent Care Lake Oswego wants to offer some insight.

When Should You Consider Taking a Sick Day?

Although you might not want to take a sick day, there are times that it is important for you to stay home, especially when you are looking to keep your coworkers safe from sickness.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends staying home if you have a fever or if you are experiencing any of the signs of the flu. The flu is extremely contagious, so spending time around others when you are sick can spread the illness quickly.

Ways to Avoid Spreading Germs

  • Wash your hands regularly.
  • Cover your nose and mouth when coughing and sneezing.
  • Keep tissues handy and throw them away after use.
  • Avoid coughing and/or sneezing in your hands.
  • Steer clear of others if you’re sick.

When Can You Go Back to Work After Being Sick?

There’s no single answer here. It depends on your individual symptoms and the severity of your illness.

With that said, however, if you have had a fever—do not return to work or other activities outside the home until you have been fever-free for 24 hours without the help of fever-reducing medications.

How to Recover Faster

  • Take it easy.
  • Stay hydrated.
  • Meditate.
  • Gargle with salt water.
  • Sip a hot beverage.
  • Eat a bland diet.
