How Can We Avoid Skin Cancer?
Did you know that one in five Americans will be diagnosed with some type of skin cancer by age 70? But while this type of cancer is common, it’s also largely preventable.
That’s why our team at AFC Urgent Care Lake Oswego wants to offer some tips on how to stay safe in the sun this summer.
Am I at Risk for Skin Cancer?
Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States. While everyone is at risk for skin cancer, there are some groups that are more at risk than others.
If you have blue or green eyes and/or red or blonde hair, then you are at a higher risk of developing skin cancer. Also, if you have skin that burns easily or have freckles, you are at an increased risk of skin cancer.
Sun Safety 101
- Wear sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 on all exposed skin when outside.
- Reapply sunscreen at least every two hours, or more often if sweating or swimming.
- Seek shade whenever possible.
- Stay indoors between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., when UV rays are most intense.
- Wear a broad-brimmed hat to protect the scalp, ears and neck.
- Choose sunglasses with UVA/UVB protection.
What Does Skin Cancer Look Like?
Skin cancer’s appearance depends greatly on the type of skin cancer involved. But it’s important to keep a careful eye on your skin so that you will notice if it changes in any way.
