How Do You Treat Spring Allergies?
Did you know? According to the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, around 23.6 million Americans were diagnosed with hay fever in the last year. And this number only seems to be rising.
Our team at AFC Urgent Care Lake Oswego wants you to enjoy a happy and healthy spring without letting seasonal allergies stand in your way.
What Causes Spring Allergies?
If you feel as though you conquer one allergy season only to have another begin, you would be right. Now that we are moving into the warmer weather, we are starting to be hit with pollen. Thanks to the trees, grasses, weeds and flowers that are all in bloom, pollen is being released into the air on a daily basis.
Therefore, when you step outside, especially on high pollen-count days, you can notice a wide-range of spring allergy symptoms.
Symptoms of Seasonal Allergies
- Runny nose
- Watery eyes
- Sneezing
- Coughing
- Itchy eyes and nose
- Dark circles under the eyes
Can I Still Go Outside If I Have Seasonal Allergies?
Of course! There is no need to stay inside all spring just because you experience seasonal allergies.
Your first step in limiting your allergies is to uncover what you’re allergic to. Many different types of pollen stir up seasonal allergies. Once you know your allergen, pay attention to the pollen count each day and avoid spending a lot of time outdoors (or having the windows open) on days your allergen is out in full force. Taking an OTC antihistamine can also be helpful.
Ways to Reduce Allergy Triggers
- Stay indoors on dry, windy days.
- Allow other people to help with lawn mowing and/or other garden chores.
- Avoid hanging laundry outside.
- Wear a pollen mask.
- Take a shower and change clothes when inside for the night.
