What Is the Best Way to Lower Your Risk of Skin Cancer?
According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States.
During Melanoma/Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month, our team at AFC Urgent Care Lake Oswego wants to share some ways to care for your skin, especially during the warmer months.
Am I at Risk for Skin Cancer?
Yes—every single person, of every single skin tone and ethnicity, is at risk of developing skin cancer. It doesn’t discriminate.
That said, though, there are a number of factors that could put you at an increased risk for skin cancer. Fair skin, a history of sunburns, excessive sun exposure and a large number of moles are all factors that can increase your skin cancer risk.
Ways to Take Care of Your Skin
- Cleanse your face at least twice a day.
- Get plenty of sleep.
- Make sure you are getting antioxidants through the foods you eat.
- Gently exfoliate your face.
- Exercise regularly.
- Use a daily moisturizer.
- Drink plenty of water.
What Are the Signs of Skin Cancer?
It is important to perform regular skin checks on yourself to make sure you notice any changes on your skin at the earliest stage possible. When it comes to skin cancer, there are certain skin changes to watch for.
For instance, if you notice a large, brownish spot on your skin with darker speckles, you will want to get the area checked out to ensure there is no skin cancer. In addition, a mole that changes in size, color and feel needs to be checked by a physician, as well as any lesion that burns or itches.
Ways to Protect Your Skin From the Sun
- Use sunscreen every day, even if it’s cloudy.
- Put sunscreen on at least 15 to 30 minutes before going outside.
- Use a sunscreen with a UVA and UVB protection factor of at least 30 or more.
- Reapply sunscreen at least every two hours.
- Seek shelter in the shade, if possible.
- Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants and skirts when possible, along with hats and sunglasses.
