Why Should You Get Your Flu Shot Before Halloween?
Halloween is just around the corner, and you know what that means? Believe it or not, it means that you need to make sure you’ve gotten your flu shot!
Our team at AFC Urgent Care Lake Oswego wants to challenge you to get your flu shot before Halloween—and here is why!
Why Should You Get the Flu Shot Now?
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that nearly everyone age 6 months and older receives a flu shot before the end of October.
That’s because it takes two weeks for your body to build up antibodies after receiving the flu shot, so getting it before Oct. 31 ensures your body will have protection by the time the flu season is in full swing.
Other Ways to Prevent the Flu
- Wash your hands regularly.
- Avoid touching your face with your hands.
- Regularly disinfect commonly touched surfaces, like doorknobs.
- Get plenty of sleep.
- Eat a balanced diet.
- Exercise for at least 30 minutes on most days.
- Steer clear of those who are sick.
What Are the Symptoms to Look for When It Comes to the Flu?
The first and usually most obvious symptom is extreme fatigue. This fatigue is often accompanied by intense body aches.
Other than those symptoms, flu symptoms are often quite similar to the symptoms of a common cold or other viruses. You may experience a runny or stuffy nose, a fever, a sore throat, a cough, and headaches.
Treatment of the Flu
- Take an antiviral medication, if one is prescribed.
- Get plenty of rest.
- Drink plenty of fluids.
- Take OTC meds to alleviate specific symptoms like a fever or cough.
